SEMINAR ON DECCANI URDU


Pune: Sponsored by the Deccan Muslim Education & Research Institute, Pune, a two-day seminar on ‘Deccani Urdu: Language, Literature and Culture’ was organised here from 30 to 31 January 2004.

In the history of Urdu literature Deccani Urdu holds fundamental position without which the history of Urdu literature would remain incomplete. It has its own linguistic culture and in Southern India it has been highly influenced by Marathi language. It evolved and developed during imperialistic regimes. Participants, which included scholars from Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad expressed these views. Other than India, formidable work on Deccani Urdu was done in England, France and Germany. Among Indian scholars Maulvi Abdul Haq, Dr Mohiyuddin Qadri Zor, Prof. Abdul Qadir Suroori, Prof. Masud Hussain Khan and others have rendered great services to Deccani Urdu literature. Noted litterateur and poet Malik Tase presented a comprehensive article. Two books Talaffuznuma Urdu Lughat and Junoobi Hind Main Urdu Zaban-o-Ajab Ki Tadris Ke Masail by Dr Ismat Jawed and Prof. Abdus Sattar Dalvi respectively were released on this occasion.
